Prospect Villa

A little bit of history

We believe Prospect Hill was named after the Ship—’Prospect of Whitby’ (a collier—square rigged vessel with three masts and weighing 373 tons) which regularly sailed down the coast to deliver coal to the city of London around 1777. Young (Captain) James Cook once worked on that ship as an apprentice.

In the centre of London is a pub named after the ship—Prospect of Whitby, which was very popular with Samual Pepys and Samual Johnson (as well as a popular meeting place for villains and smugglers) who were amoung several famous visitors to the pub. The pub was named Prospect of Whitby in 1777 after it was rebuilt following a fire which destroyed the original building.
